I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and had a nice winter break! Before break we finished 20 lessons on code.org in which we learned some basic concepts of computer science and programming. Attached to this message will be a 20 questions review for us to refresh our memory.

To finish up everything we have been talking about in regards to advertisements, infomercials and movie trailers the students will complete the attached assessment on a separate sheet of paper. The students will be allowed to use their computers to complete the assessment and may use notes from the power point from the previous blog post. The questions on the assessment do not need to be written out but the questions should be answered in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper.
We have spent some time examining what makes an advertisement effective. We looked at the 4 core emotions that advertisements target, we talked about where we can find advertisements and why they appear to be everywhere.
Our assignment now is to create a storyboard outlining an advertisement that we create ourselves. This assignment can be done in groups of up to 3 people. The first step is to brainstorm an idea for an advertisement. This can be for a product, service or social cause. Next the group will create a ten cell storyboard outlining their ad. This can be hand written on the paper provided in class, or done on storyboardthat.com. 1. Sign up using your school email 2. Select "I am a Student" / Join my Teacher 3. Enter Class name and Key written on the board Our previous assignment was to examine the credibility of online sources. We spent some time as a class discussing the things to look for when determining whether or not an online source is reliable. During this time we touched on how online advertisements may or may not lend credibility to a website. Now we are going to look at what makes an advertisement effect and how technology interacts with how the ads find their way to us.
Our goal with the next assignment is to examine what makes a website trustworthy. We want to know that the website we are using for a project is a good source! In class we will be discussing a few skills to use in determining whether or not a source is worth using and we will be putting those skills to the test in an Online Detective activity. Please view the attached documents for directions, and an example!
We have now completed two different projects using Microsoft office. The first was a travel brochure and the second was our news report on the events of Hurricane Irma. It is important for us to diversify our classroom work and in effort to do so we will change gears a little bit at the end of this week. Students will make a blog post discussing what they think their strengths are. The students should include what they are interested in, what subjects they enjoy and excel at, and also what subjects they think they need to work on. The students should also consider what they may want to do for a career in the future and what attributes go into being successful in that field. Once the students have done this they will take the free personality tests on my-personality-test.com/. Once the students complete the tests they will add their results and what they think about them onto their Weebly blog post that was started earlier. The goal here is to be conscious about their strengths and personality traits. This is important as it will help us keep these things in mind as we explore the career pathways side of the course.
We began our travel brochure project on 9/1 and will be finishing the project by uploading onto our Weebly pages by 9/19. You may be thinking that surely a brochure should not take so long! Well, our school has been closed and used as a shelter during the massive hurricane Irma that hit the whole of our state. As a result, many within our community were without power for an extended amount of time. It is possible that some are STILL without power, and while our area was very lucky and dodged the most severe parts of the storm there are still those affected by the strong winds the storm brought. Some students evacuated along with their families, and others hunkered down. In short, everyone's experience with Irma has been different and it is important to express those experiences. The assignment will be to create a news report on their storm experience during the week off of school. This can be accomplished through a short video recap or in the form of a newsletter. This will allow the students to express their experience either through speech, writing, or visual art.
Friday 9/1/2017 marks the date our webpages have been completed along with a one paragraph introduction about ourselves. We will introduce the next project today, which will be to create a travel advertisement brochure using Microsoft word. The students will be free to use the brochure template, and can build the brochure based on a place they have been, a place they want to go, or even a fictional location. This assignment will tie in the ability to search for and insert images into word documents, basic research on the location the brochure will feature, basic persuasion techniques among other skills relating to a well rounded student. After the brochure is complete the students will upload it to their webpages and make a blog post outlining the project and the steps they used to complete it.
On Monday 8/28/2017 our mission was to familiarize ourselves with Weebly and to begin customizing our own sites. The goal is to build on the site as we go through the school year starting with a introduction about ourselves to be followed up with regular blog posts and assignment uploads. This is all in effort to put our ideas on good digital citizenship and the building of a positive online persona into practice as well as utilizing technology to hone our organizational, writing and communication skills to be carried with us through the rest of our education and onto a successful career!
My name is Mr.McKinney and this is my first year teaching at BRMS. I received my degree from the University of South Florida! I am excited to be teaching Exploring Technology and Career Pathways as there are a lot of helpful things we can learn, and carry with us throughout our lives. I am also a big sports fan; football, baseball, basketball, hockey and golf to name a few. I was born in Florida and have lived here all my life so you'll find me always rooting for the Buccaneers, Rays and Lightning. I spent my summer camping in northern Wisconsin where the weather was much cooler and the scenery beautiful. I am looking forward to a great year! |
